Tokyo haneda slots
Tokyo International Airport (東京国際空港, Tōkyō Kokusai Kūkō), commonly known as Haneda Airport (羽田空港, Haneda Kūkō), Tokyo Haneda Airport, and Haneda International Airport (IATA: HND, ICAO: RJTT), is one of the two primary airports that serve the Greater Tokyo Area, and is the primary base of Japan's two major domestic . Delta objected to the Tokyo Haneda plan, arguing competitors will benefit more. CAPA has previously reviewed Delta's concerns on Tokyo Haneda slot growth. To recap: Delta (rightfully) regards the deal as benefitting competitors more: ANA/United and JAL/American are in JVs, whereas Delta has no Japanese partner. The Japanese and . Interestingly, though, Delta’s application to the DOT did not list Minneapolis/St. Paul – Tokyo Haneda as its choice market should it only receive 1 of the 6 available slots. Instead, Los Angeles – Tokyo Haneda is its preferred designee route in the worst case scenario, while LAX – Haneda + MSP – Haneda is its next choice.
With Four More Tokyo/Haneda Slots, Delta Could Pull Out of Its Ever-Shrinking Narita Hub Entirely
Japan's flag carrier Japan Airlines began its first domestic operations from Haneda in I would expect this is living on borrowed time. Tokyo-Haneda will remain a severely restricted airport with limited competition. CAPA Membership provides access to all news and analysis on the site, along with access to many areas of our comprehensive databases and toolsets. Terminal hours may be extended to hour operation due to StarFlyer 's late-night and early-morning service between Haneda and Kitakyushu , which began in March American could have made its submission to pre-empt any chance of Delta saying anything, or simply to make a point. Haneda was the primary international airport serving Tokyo until ; from to , Haneda handled almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo as well as "scheduled charter" flights to a small number of major cities in East Asia , while Narita International Airport handled the vast majority of international flights. In , a dedicated international terminal was opened at Haneda in conjunction with the completion of a fourth runway, allowing long-haul flights during night-time hours.
Haneda handled 85,, passengers in ; by passenger throughput, it was the third-busiest airport in Asia and the fourth-busiest in the world , after Hartsfield—Jackson Atlanta International Airport , Beijing Capital International Airport Asia's busiest , and Dubai International Airport.
Before the construction of Haneda Airport, aviators in Tokyo used various beaches of Tokyo Bay as airstrips, including beaches near the current site of Haneda. Haneda was a town located on Tokyo Bay, which merged into the Tokyo ward of Kamata in It was Japan's largest civil airport at the time it was constructed, and took over from the army air base at Tachikawa as the main operating base of Japan Air Transport , then the country's flag carrier.
The first flight from the airport on August 25, carried a load of insects to Dalian. During the s, Haneda handled flights to destinations in Japan mainland, Taiwan , Korea both under Japanese rules and Manchuria ruled by Manchukuo.

I was wrong, and now the way I figure it, Delta is four Haneda slots away from pulling out of Narita entirely. A lot has changed since that time. Longer-range aircraft meant that Northwest and Delta post-merger could overfly the Narita hub and get passengers from the US to important Asian cities without a stop. That was a big blow to the hub. Things accelerated when Haneda was opened up for limited US flights.
Delta never got enough Haneda slots to move the entirety of its remaining Narita operation, so it moved the flights it could, and then let the skeleton of Narita hold on for dear life. Once relations thawed between Delta and its partner Korean, they formed a joint venture which would flow traffic via Incheon instead of Tokyo.
The end was clearly near for Narita. Slowly but surely, routes were cut from Narita. It also stopped flying to Guam last month in the face of a dramatic decrease in demand after the saber-rattling from North Korea.
Today, thanks to the opening of Haneda, there are only four of these routes left flying: Portland, Seattle, Detroit, and Atlanta. Intra-Asia These are the routes that Americans could connect on to go beyond Tokyo.
After Shanghai ends in July, there will only be two of these left. The other is Manila, a market with more demand from Tokyo itself than from the US. I would expect this is living on borrowed time. Beach The last and seemingly-strongest market segment involves beach markets which are almost entirely for Japanese people looking for some sun.
